Description: | Scale: 1:32. A contemporary full hull model of an English yacht (1690), built plank on frame in the 'Navy Board? style. The lavishly decorated hull is complete with 16 wreathed gun ports, of which ten are dummies, a deeply carved taffrail above the stern, a quarter 'badge? on either side to provide light into the state cabin, and a double-headed figurehead reflecting the dual monarchy of William and Mary.
This vessel was cutter rigged with a single mast and was steered by a tiller, located on the poop deck aft. At this scale, the model represents a vessel measuring 68 feet along the upper deck by 20 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 120 burden.
Yachts were recorded in England from the middle of the 17th century with the return of Charles II from exile, and together with enthusiasm from the Duke of York, the sport of yachting became popular amongst the nobility.
