Description: | S.S. GREAT EASTERN. WORKING MODEL CONSTRUCTED BY JOHN SCOTT RUSSELL BEFORE THE BUILDING OF THE SHIP IN 1857. THIS SHIP LAID IN 1869 THE DIRECT LINE OF SUBMARINE CABLES MANUFACTURED BY THE TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE CO., FOR THE BRITISH INDIAN SUBMARINE TELEGRAPH CO. BETWEEN EGYPT (SUEZ) AND ADEN, AND FROM ADEN TO INDIA (BOMBAY). THIS COY., WAS AMALGAMATED IN 1872 WITH OTHERS, FORMING THE EASTERN TELEGRAPH CO.
Metal plaque with a punched hole in each corner for the painted model of the Great Eastern made entirely in wood with metal fittings.

There are two other models in the collection of this ship, a diorama showing the building of her (SLR0904) and another full hull model showing her as a cable layer (SLR2146).
