Description: | Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a ship-rigged sloop (circa 1795), built plank on frame and mounted on original wooden baseboard. It is complete with a variety of deck fittings such as capstan, gratings, wheel and bilge pumps. Copper sheathing covers the lower portion of the hull, an improvement introduced in the 1780 to combat the ravages of the teredo worm. It is also fitted with Captain Schank?s sliding keels, a mechanism to help prevent leeway when under sail. This model probably represents one of the many 14-gun ship-rigged sloops built in 1794-95. This sloop would measure 107 feet along the upper deck by 29 feet in the beam with an approximate tonnage of 400.
