Description: | Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of a gunboat (circa 1788), built and carved from the solid and finished in the Georgian style. The model is decked with removable hatches, rigged with a single mast and gaff, and a single 32-pounder cannon mounted on a sliding carriage in the bow. Measuring 48 feet in length by 14 feet in the beam it had an approximate tonnage of 40 (builders old measurement). This model agrees very closely with an original plan dated 1787, held in the NMM collection. It appears to have been restored in recent years.
Large numbers of sailing and pulling gunboats, sometimes with one or two guns, were built during the late 1780s. With their shallow draught and easy manoeuvrability they were able to get close inshore and bombard enemy installations and shipping. The gun operates on a slide forward. Some other gunboats carried their gun aft while other had a gun at both bow and stern. The shot were carried in racks below the upper deck. The small hatches on either side of the deck were removed when necessary to accommodate the oarsmen.
CA: BBB. Referenced in Anderson's catalogue (1952) as coming from the Rotunda, Woolwich but he doesn't give a page reference. Catalogue of Ship Models Part 1 Ships of the Western Tradition to 1815 by A.H. Waite also states it came from the Rotunda Museum, Woolwich.
