Description: | The Theatre Collection was established in 1951 with funds awarded by the Rockefeller Foundation. It is housed in specifically designed strongrooms in Britain's first Department of Drama at the University of Bristol a city with a rich theatrical heritage. Over the past 50 years the Collection has expanded into an internationally renowned research centre and it attracts visitors from all over the world. At the same time it continues to serve its original purpose as a resource for the staff and students of the Department of Drama and the Bristol community. Its collections are particularly strong in theatre in the South West Victorian and post-World War II theatre history women's theatre and scenery and costume design. The wide array of visual material is regularly displayed in temporary exhibitions on site with previous themes including Shakespeare the Old Vic Theatre Audiences Theatre and the Sea and Drama Queens. Holdings include: Archival records including extensive production documents; Reference library of books and periodicals; Programmes playbills and posters; Photographs and slides; Scenery and costume designs; Set and theatre models; Paintings and prints. Major archive collections include : London Old Vic; Bristol Old Vic; Herbert Beerbohm Tree and Her Majesty's Theatre; Welfare State International Theatre Company. Personal collections include : Eric Jones-Evans' theatre collection and Irving memorabilia; John Moody Bristol Old Vic Director; Actors : Ernest Thesiger; John Clements; Robert Donat; Designers : Alan Tagg; Michael Knight; John Elvery; Ralph Adron; Theatre historians.Kathleen Barker; Richard Southern.; All catalogued items are searchable online.
