Description: | This large and significant collection comprises records, especially production documentation; programmes; playbills; posters; prompt-books; and a reference library of books and periodicals.
The important collections which were among the collections early acquisitions were the Robinson collection of 18th and 19th century playbills for West Country theatres; and the Landstone bequest which provides a complete range of theatre programmes for all professional productions in London between 1944 and 1969. There is also the major collection of the theatre historian Dr Richard Southern, which includes the unpublished manuscript notebooks of the distinguished theatre historian William John Lawrence, compiled in the 1880s.
The Beerbohm Tree collection was added in 1972 and it especially rich in prompt books and play scripts, the most important of which are perhaps those for his elaborate Shakespearean production at Her Majesty's Theatre. There are production photographs, a considerable number of scene and costume designs, ledgers and account books of the theatre.
Another major acquisition was the Dr Eric Jones-Evans collection of theatre memorabilia, especially rich in material about Henry Irving. Other collections include that of the Old Vic director John Moody; actors Ernest Thesiger, John Clements and Robert Donat; designers Alan Tagg, Michael Knight, John Elvery and Ralph Adron; and theatre historian Kathleen Barker.
There is also material relating to French and German theatre. | Subjects: | Archives | Source: | Cornucopia - Discovering UK Collections | Address: | Department of Drama
