Description: | The Glasgow Collection covers all aspects of Glasgow's history. It includes c.26,000 19th and 20th century playbills and programmes, press cuttings from 1715 to the present, 19th and 20th century pantomime libretti, prints, drawing and photographs of places of entertainment in Glasgow.
The Music Room has a full range of both music and books on music, miniature scores of the music played by the Scottish Orchestra and its successor the Scottish National Orchestra. Anthologies of songs; Scottish material is particularly well represented, particularly Scottish dance music. Collection of periodicals. Programmes of Glasgow Choral and Orchestral Union, Scottish National Orchestra and the Glasgow Orpheus Choir. Frank Kidson's library containing folk songs and folk dances of Great Britain and Ireland, English ballad operas, popular music of the 18th century, 150 early hymnals and psalters, 200 early operas and ballad operas, 100 volumes of glees, 500 music hall songs, 350 volumes of English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh songs, 500 volumes of keyboard music from 18th century onwards, 200 volumes of string music, 200 volumes of music for the flute, music for the London Gardens - Vauxhall, Ranelagh and Marylebone, 10 volumes of broadsides. The Glasgow Collection also includes the library of the Moody-Manners Opera Company, containing full scores, vocal scores, orchestral parts, chorus parts and libretti of operas with smaller collection of songs. There is also a set of coloured illustrations giving details of costuming for various operas. The library of F.O. Shead, instumentalist and conductor, with particular interest in the violin and orchestra. Collection of Robert Turnbull, music critic of the Glasgow Herald 1899-1921, including ten scrapbooks of his writings for this paper. The Gardiner Collection represents the library of Gardiner, 1853-1910, folk song collector working mainly in the south of England. Scrapbooks of D.C. Parker, music critic of the Glasgow Evening Times in the 1930s. Manuscripts of Francis George Scott, 1880-1958, composer and song-writer, including many unpublished songs. History of the Glasgow Choral Union (24 volumes) compiled by Robert Craig. Russell-Ferguson Collection, 19 volumes dedicated to the history of the harp, recordings and scripts entitled Hebridean Song and Story. Smaller manuscript items include a few in the hand of Frederick Lamond, Glasgow born pianist who was one of Liszt's last pupils.; Glasgow theatres and music halls: a guide, 1980.
