Description: | The National Film and Television Archive (NFTVA) was founded in 1935 and is a division of the British Film Institute. Its aim is to select, acquire, document and make permanently available, a national collection of moving images which have lasting value as examples of the art of cinema and television. The NFTVA's collection now holds over 400,000 titles dating from 1895 to the present day and comprises feature films, documentaries, television programmes, amateur film, advertisements, newsfilms and videos. The collection includes many celebrated theatrical figures in film and television productions - for example Johnston Forbes-Robertson in "Hamlet" (1913) and as Laurence Olivier in "As You Like It" (1936). The NFTVA has acquired footage of personalities such as Sarah Bernhardt and Ellen Terry and music hall and variety artists from the early silent comics through Morecambe and Wise to the stand-up comedians of late-night revue. Television drama is equally well represented, ranging from episodes of the ground-breaking series "The Wednesday Play" to current drama series and serials. Film and television material on subjects associated with the performing arts, for example set design, masks, rock music, performance art and arts administration, are also included. The NFTVA is the repository for films donated by Rambert Dance Company and The Royal Ballet and for the material selected for permanent preservation by the Society for Dance Research. The Stills, Posters and Design Collection holds images of theatrical personalities.; Listings from the database can be provided by title, production credits and cast credits, and also by director, production company and production country. Subject approach via the Cataloguing Section's subject index held on card and computer.
