Description: | Gilded reeded Stamp: "W. HOLLAND / Frame Maker & Mount Cutter / 12, Sherwood St., Golden Square, W." (on card) CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) The slatted shutters suggest that the scene is on the Continent. It is possilbe that the drawing dates from when Whistler was convalescing at Pavillon Madelein, Pourville-sur-Mer, a property owned by the Birnie Philips. There are signs of alterations in the door, where a double line of pen runs from the left to the middle of the door, just under the cage. Below this, rough chalk outlines indicate that Whistler originally intended to add some other details, which cannot be identified.
