Description: | Gilded reeded, 40.8 x 48.3 x 7.2 s. with butterfly; b.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This broadly handled seascape was painted at the Normandy resort of Pourville-sur-Mer, near Dieppe, France. Whistler spent the summer of 1899 there, convalescing after a period of recurring illness. He stayed with his late wife's family, the Birnie Philips, at the Pavillon-Madelaine.
