Description: | Unframed s. in plate with butterfly; c.l. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This is a copper etching plate. Whistler married the widow of E. W. Godwin, Beatrix Godwin, in August, 1888. Their honeymoon tour took them through the Loire area of France, where Whistler used the 34 grounded copper plates he had taken with him to capture views and buildings that appealed to him as they went. The couple viewed a number of chateaux as well as travelling through the picturesque towns of Touraine. This view of the town of Loches was drawn from the gardens of the chateau where Charles VII beautiful mistress lived and died. A related etching of the same subject by Beatrix Whistler, who was working alongside her husband as he etched, is also included in the Hunterian collection. (See also GLAHA 46639).
