Description: | Unframed s. in plate with butterfly; u.l. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This is an etching plate. Whistler married the widow of E. W. Godwin, Beatrix Godwin, in August, 1888. Their honeymoon tour took them through the Loire area of France, where Whistler used the 34 grounded copper plates he had taken with him to capture views and buildings that appealed to him as they went. The couple viewed a number of chateaux as well as travelling through the picturesque towns of Touraine.
