Description: | Marked E339 'FIJI' CULT unknown New Caledonia Melanesia The club is of uneven form, with a four-pointed head with round pointed top and a round shaft with slightly raised grip. It has been carved of very hard wood and has the natural high polish typical of such New Caledonian wooden artefacts.
This club is recorded in the Roberson catalogue as 'William Hunter from Captain Cook' on unknown evidence and has been confirmed by Adrienne Kaeppler as collected on a Cook voyage. It may also be one of the clubs mentioned by Laskey under B of his 1813 account, specifically 'one which bears a striking resemblance to the old English battle axe; the head being divided into quarters, each quarter pointed.' This would imply that it is from the Old Hunterian Collection. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | JEN : CLUB : DCOOK : HUNTER_ETHNO_2007 : : : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
