Description: | Marked E364 and faded mark reads 'NEW CALEDONIA' CULT unknown New Caledonia Melanesia The club has a round flat head of irregular shape with a v-shaped raised ridge joining the head to the shaft. The shaft is cylindrical with a typical New Caledonian elongated flange at the butt. It has the high polish and dark colour often seen in such New Caledonian war clubs, however it is also possible that it has been coated in the black varnish used for Old Hunterian objects.
The Robertson list catalogues this club as 'William Hunter from Captain Cook' on unknown evidence. Adrienne Kaeppler has confirmed this and suggests a set of four clubs may have been given to Dr. Hunter by Johan and George Forster.
It is also possible that this is one of the clubs mentioned by Laskey under 'B' in his 1813 account. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | JEN : CLUB : DCOOK : HUNTER_ETHNO_2007 : : : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
