Description: | Word processed illustrated transcription (36pp) of letters written home to his parents, May 1914 - January 1917, primarily while serving as a Private with the 1/4th Battalion Royal Scots (156th Brigade, 52nd Division) in the United Kingdom (April - May 1915), at Gallipoli (June - July 1915) and in hospital in Egypt with typhoid (August - September 1915), then as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers (90th Brigade, 30th Division) on the Western Front (January 1917), describing his enlistment and embarkation, the voyage to Gallipoli via Alexandria, brief references to the fighting on the Peninsula, life in the Cairo hospital where he was recovering from typhoid, and trench conditions in France and his officer's billets; also included in the transcription are letters of condolence from fellow soldiers relating to his death in action on the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres (31 July 1917).
