Description: | Ts transcription (79pp) of a diary written in the third person during his service as second in command of the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade (80th Brigade, 27th Division) on the Western Front, March - October 1915, describing involvement in the Second Battle of Ypres (April - May 1915), estaminets in Ypres and the dangers of being billeted in the town, and trench conditions; in Salonika, November 1915 - July 1916, referring to their arrival in Greece, trench digging, dutise in the line near the Gulf of Orfano, the digging up of ancient greek artefacts, and life in Salonika town; then in command of the 1/5th Battalion Suffolk Regiment (163rd Brigade, 54th Division) in Egypt and Palestine, August 1916 - January 1918, giving his first impressions of Alexandria and describing the Suez Canal defences, encounters with Egyptian sellers, recreational activities, the trek east across the Sinai peninsula to El Arish (February 1917), the First Battle of Gaza (26 - 27 March 1917), railway construction, the use of tanks during the Second Battle of Gaza (17 - 19 April 1917), aerial warfare, the Third Battle of Gaza (November 1917) where he mentions finding Turkish debris after the fighting, the advance north to Jerusalem, and how they obtained food locally.
