Description: | An important and very informative collection comprising an ms memoir (ca 200pp) covering his extensive First World War service, plus a ts transcription of the memoir in three volumes, some letters from fellow senior officers, 1916 - 1917, and ms transcriptions (40pp) of official war diaries, lecture notes and other official and private documents concerning his experiences. The first volume of the memoir (73pp) covers his service with the 2nd Battalion Welsh Regiment (3rd Brigade, 1st Division) in France from August 1914, commanding then November 1914 - January 1915, and involvement in the retreat from Mons, the Battle of the Aisne, the fighting at Gheluvelt (31 October), the First Battle of Ypres and action at Festubert (December 1914) and Givenchy (January 1915); the second volume (61pp) covers his service as GSO2 to the 38th Division in the United Kingdom, April - November 1915, and France, November 1915 - June 1916, as 94th Brigade Commander (31st Division) during the immediate preparations for and start of the Somme offensive, June - July 1916, as 11th Brigade Commander (4th Division), July - November 1916, including the feint attack on the Belgian coast and the fighting on the Somme in October, and as 140th Brigade Commander (50th Division), March - July 1917, including involvement in the Battle of Arras (April); the third volume (65pp) covers his command of 150th Brigade (50th Division) on the Somme (March 1918), around Armentieres (April) and on the Aisne (May), where he was captured by the Germans. He was interviewed by the Kaiser on 28 May 1918, spent some time in several prisoner of war camps, and wrote an interesting report on conditions in Germany at the time of the Armistice on his return to the United Kingdom in December 1918.
