Description: | Papers covering principally his military service in the United Kingdom with the 9th Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (December 1914 – May 1916) and on the Salonika Front as an interpreter attached to the Chief British Censor and to 67th Brigade (June – December 1916) as Assistant Intelligence Officer and, later, Intelligence Officer, XII Corps, (December 1916 – December 1918), comprising: service records, leave and movement papers; a notebook with ms diary entries (40pp) for 13 May – 8 June 1916, a diary for 1918 with entries for 17 December 1917 – 28 October 1918 covering his intelligence work and repeated bouts of illness and 2 detailed letters to his wife (10pp and 12pp) both apparently written in September 1916, describing conditions on the Salonika Front and the morale of German prisoners; papers (including 93 signals) relating to the 67th Infantry Brigade covering operations near Macukovo (September and November 1916) and raids and patrols carried out by the 11th Battalion Welsh Regiment (October 1916) and 7th Battalion South Wales Borderers (November 1916); two files of papers in Turkish, ?Bulgarian, Greek and English relating to deserters, espionage and counterespionage in Macedonia, comprising intelligence reports (including information concerning the crew of a downed Zeppelin), captured documents (including a message in Bulgarian hidden inside a quill) and correspondence (May 1916 – December 1918); 14 letters and postcards from friends and comrades (January 1915 – February 1920) with interesting references to attitudes to the war, officers' morality, sniping on the Western Front and operations by the battleship HMS LORD NELSON at the Dardanelles (March – April 1915); also 278 photographs and a folder with 4 sketches and other ephemera, all mostly relating to the Salonika Front.
