Description: | Five Field Service Army notebooks containing entries in the form of a unit war diary and/or notes and messages often with astute and occasionally incisive comments, especially concerning poor staff work, (99 pp, 119 pp, 24 pp, 131 pp and 17 pp) written during his service: with HQ 1st Australian Infantry Brigade on staff duties at Gallipoli (30 November – 20 December 1915) with useful descriptions of conditions and of arrangements for the evacuation; undergoing training in Egypt (December 1915 – March 1916); on the Western Front (March 1916 – April 1918) as Brigade Major, with a detailed record of conditions, casualties, honours, troop movements, trench raids and gas attacks, as well as of operations at Pozières and Le Transloy during the Battle of the Somme (July, August and October - November 1916) and during the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, with interesting references also to discipline (see 8 August 1916 and December 1916) camouflage (January – February 1917), as Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion AIF (25 March – December 1917) during the capture of Hermies and the Third Battle of Ypres (September 1917), and finally as GSO 2, 1st Australian Division (December 1917 – April 1918), including during operations at Hazebrouck, when German forces were successfully repulsed; also photocopies (111 pp) of his service records and other personal papers, 1887 – 1943, an excellent ts account (8pp) by him of the evacuation of Anzac forces from Gallipoli and other notes by him, papers relating to the 4th Battalion AIF, 1914 – 1915, papers relating to the 2nd Australian Battalion, 1st Australian Infantry Brigade, 1917, 1926 – 1948, including the unit’s Old Comrades Association, official orders for 1st Australian Infantry Brigade during the Battle of the Somme (1916) and further papers relating to the AIF, 1918 – 1919, including documents on demobilisation and repatriation, as well as an ms account (4pp) of the Ocean Island Volunteer Force in 1914.
