Description: | Photocopied ts transcription (54pp) of a diary describing the service of an unnamed Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion Somerset Light Infantry (11th Brigade, 4th Division) on the Western Front, 21 August - 17 November 1914, covering his crossing to France (23 August), advance as far as St Quention before retreating across the Aisne (14 September), his withdrawal to St Omer (11 October) and move to Belgium to the area around Nieppe and in the trenches at Le Ghier, Ploegsteert Wood, giving details of his movements despite his taking little part in the actual fighting (the Battles of the Marne and the Aisne) until arrival in Belgium.
