Description: | Ts account (251pp), entitled 'Schoolboy Into War' and later published in 1978, recording his experiences as a subaltern with the 2nd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment (24th Brigade, 23rd Division) on the Western Front, 1916 - 1918, detailing his background and schooling, his enlistment and training, embarkation for France (April 1916) and his first experience of life in the trenches before further training in preparation for the Somme Offensive, his involvement in the assault on Contalmaison (7 July 1916) during which he was wounded and evacuated home, rejoining his Battalion at Plymouth in October 1916 and going into line at Bouchavesnes in January 1917, night patrols in No Man's Land during which he was wounded, time spent in hospital in a stately home in Kent before returning to the front near the River Lys in September 1917 and then to the Ypres Salient (November 1917 - March 1918) before taking up positions near Bethencourt where he was again wounded and evacuated to the United Kingdom, describing his time in an officers convalescent camp before returning briefly to Belgium after the Armistice.
