Description: | Photocopied ts memoir (82pp), written in 1919, recording his experiences while serving with the Machine Gun Section of the 11th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (112th Brigade, 37th Division) and, from early 1917, with the 153rd Field Regiment RE (37th Division) mainly on the Western Front, March 1916 - December 1917, describing life on the Home Front and his conscription under the Derby Scheme, Zeppelin raids on the Midlands, his training on the Isle of Wight before embarkation and the voyage to France, further training at the Bull Ring in Etaples, his journey to the front line near Lens and the devastation of the Western Front, living conditions in his billets and the trenches, in action at Mailly Maillet, his health problems which led to evacuation by hospital train to Le Treport (late 1916), Christmas celebrations in hospital, his return to his unit on the Somme (early 1917) before being transferred to the Royal Engineers, involvement in the Battle of Arras (April - May 1917), his work in trench construction and clearing roads, hospitalisation in the 50th General Hospital, Bailleul (August 1917) and then time spent in convalescent camps where he describes recreational activities including painting and the theatre.
