Description: | Photocopy of a ts memoir (11pp) of his service as a private in 12th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (95th Brigade, 5th Division) describing life in France and on the Western Front, particularly on the Somme, between November 1915 and July 1916, when he was severely wounded, spending time in hospital until September 1917; together with a description of his training, September 1914 - November 1915, and his first reactions to the front line, including the effects of mud, and brief, but interesting, references to army "crucifixion" punishment, the evasion of censorship, activities of rats in the trenches, comradeship, mine preparation, the removal of lice from clothing, leave and his attitude towards a mortar section.
