Description: | 3 ms pocket diaries written whilst serving as a Private, the first diary (33pp) covering his service with the 1st (Reserve) Garrison Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, in Portsmouth and Ryde, January – December 1916, the second diary (41pp) covering his service with 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, December 1916 – March 1917, and the third diary (62pp) covering his service with 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment (78th Brigade, 26th Division), April 1917 – March 1918 in France, including entries on his training both in England and in France with especially interesting references to training in gas masks and his rifle range scores, an account of a Zeppelin raid on 25 September 1916, parades and inspections with a reminder of how to layout kit for inspection, trench digging, a memorial service in France in July 1917 to mark the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme (1916) some brief references to his experiences under shellfire, witnessing the shooting down of aeroplanes, details of his pay from the day he enlisted to March 1917 and his leave in England in March 1917. Together with a ts/ms letter accompanying his award of the British War Medal and Victory Medal (1p, 20 May 1921).
