Description: | Ts diary (84pp) covering his service as a Private in the 2nd Battalion Norfolk Regiment (37th Brigade, 14th Indian Division) in Mesopotamia, 1916 – 1919, describing his enlistment (29 May 1916), the journey from Felixstowe camp to Devonport and embarkation on the SS TAHOLI (4 September 1916), the conditions during the voyage, arrival at Basra (28 September 1916), his sickness and recovery in hospital, his duties, the conditions of the food, the journey to Sheik Saad (29 October 1916) and first impressions of the town, practising crossing rivers in pontoon boats and subsequent operations to cross the River Tigris (23 February 1917), the move to Baqubah (23 March 1917), his sickness with dysentery and move to a hospital in Amara (5 June 1917), the camp being held under quarantine conditions due to outbreaks of Smallpox and Cholera, voyage to Bombay on board the SS BARJORA (16 May 1918), and his feelings on receiving news of the Armistice (11 November 1918). Included are photocopied photographs of him in uniform and his service documentation.
