Description: | Ms diary (90pp), with ts transcription (37pp) containing background notes, kept during his service with D Squadron, 1/1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry (13th Division) in Mesopotamia, July 1916 - July 1917, describing his voyage on the steamer MOSUL up the River Tigris to the frontline near Kut, the health of his horses, his criticism of the Government's medical arrangements and the provision of rations in Mesopotamia, the extremely poor conditions in hospital and prevalence of sickness, his move south to Amara (August 1916) where he contracted dysentery, move north to Sheikh Sa'ad (December 1916) where he witnessed the artillery bombardment in support of the Second Battle of Kut, his suffering from paratyphoid fever and evacuation to hospital in Basra (January - February 1917) from where he sailed to Bombay, India, on the VARELA, and further hospitalisation in Deolali (March - May 1917) before his return to health. Also held with the diary are a framed portrait photograph of Merrill in uniform, dated September 1914; 4 uncaptioned photographs of Merrill and fellow soldiers; and an album containing printed photographic postcards showing images of Mesopotamia and Egypt.
