Description: | Ts transcription (18pp) of a diary account describing his service as a Private with the 1/8th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment) (154th Brigade, 51st Division until January 1916, then 165th Brigade, 55th Division until February 1918, then 171st Brigade, 57th Division) during the First World War, recalling his enlistment in September 1914 and early training in the United Kingdom and Home Service at Whitstable before embarking for France and the Western Front, conditions there in the trenches, gas warfare, his wounding during the Second Action of Givenchy (June 1915) and evacuation back to hospital in England before being posted to a convalescent camp near Liverpool, guard duty at Lansdowne Road hospital in Cardiff, then back to the Western Front (June 1917) for training at the Etaples 'Bull Ring', his involvement in the Third Battle of Ypres (July - September 1917) where he describes the intense shelling and going 'over the top' on 16 September, his battalion's move to the Somme, a trip home on leave (February 1918), and his wounding from poison gas during the German spring offensive (April 1918) following which he was evacuated back for treatment in England. Together with a photocopied photograph showing him in uniform.
