Description: | Bound ts account (564pp), interesting though occasionally rambling, written during his recovery at Wharncliffe War Hospital (October 1917) and describing his service with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers (86th Brigade, 29th Battalion) (May - October 1917), including his detailed memories of the men with whom he served, his training at Etaples, the preparations for The 3rd Battle of Ypres including his growing fear of gas and the effect of constant shelling on the men around him, his duties during a fatigue party carrying gas shells up the line during a German bombardment (9 July 1917), his stay in hospital with a broken nose after a fall in a trench (20 July 1917), the reports he received of the action on the opening day of 3rd Ypres, including the rumour that the Germans sent over sneezing powder along with mustard gas (31 July 1917), his return to his Battalion near Poperinghe (26 August 1917), the ceremony during which he was awarded his Military Medal, the move to Herzeele in preparation for an attack on the German lines (September 1917), his memories of the night of the attack including graphic descriptions of gas burn victims and a corpse he discovered in a shell hole, his own injury from a bullet through the shoulder (9 October 1917), his trip to the 56th General Hospital, Etaples and eventual return to the United Kingdom, and his descriptions of some of the shell shock victims at Wharncliffe Hospital, including a man who had completely lost his memory, as well as his views on the war in general, including his low opinion of the Army and the threat it posed to individuality, his anger at the Allied countries and their attitude toward fighting and his conviction to tell everyone at home the horrors of warfare in order to bring an end to hostilities, along with 2 portrait photographs of Hind.
