Description: | Ms diary (30pp), November 1916 - June 1917, and a ts memoir (272pp) written ca 1965, recording his experiences while serving in Mesopotamia with the 40th Machine Gun Company (November 1916 - March 1917) and the 4th Battalion South Wales Borderers (March 1917 - May 1917), describing his voyage out in the ROYAL GEORGE in which a fellow passenger was T E Lawrence, his unit's efforts to breach the Turkish lines at Sannaiyat and relieve Kut and the series of short, sharp engagements they undertook against the Turks, their crossing of the Tigris (February 1917), Turkish morale and the casualties sustained by his Battalion, while providing character sketches of his fellow officers; then in May 1917 his transfer to the RFC in Egypt, describing his training at Ismailia, Heliopolis and Aboukir and the frequency of flying accidents, before active service in Palestine with No 145 Squadron RAF (August 1918), No 111 Squadron RAF (1919), in Iraq with No 30 Squadron RAF (1921 - 1922) where he took part in a motorised expedition from Ramadi to Amman in Transjordan, referring to fraternisation with desert tribes and the nature of their work selecting suitable landing grounds, then with the Intelligence Section of Air HQ, Baghdad (1923) and No 55 Squadron RAF (1923), in the United Kingdom with No 29 Squadron RAF at Duxford, Cambridgeshire (1924 - 1927), attendance at the School of Photography, Farnborough (1928), and then as photographic expert to No 1 Indian Wing Station at Kohat near Peshawar, India (1929). Together with the original ts memoir (272pp), a word-processed version (45pp) and a portrait photograph of him in uniform.
