Description: | 1403 ms letters (5100pp) written by a regular officer in the Grenadier Guards to his wife during his service on the Western Front (August 1914 - January 1919), and covering his appointments as staff captain at 1st Guards Brigade HQ (August 1914 - February 1915), DAA & QMG to the 1st Division (February - August 1915), DAQMG to the Guards Division (August 1915 - March 1916), 2nd in command of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards (3rd Guards Brigade, Guards Division) (March - September 1916), CO of the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards (2nd Guards Brigade, Guards Division) (September 1916 - September 1918), Commandant of the IX Corps School (September - October 1918), and in command of 184th Infantry Brigade (61st Division) (October 1918 - April 1919); containing veiled references to the fighting on the Marne and Aisne (1914), the 1st Battle of Ypres (October 1914), the Battle of Loos (September 1915), the Battle of the Somme (July 1916), operations on the Yser Canal and the River Broenbeck during the opening of the 3rd Battle of Ypres (July - August 1917), the Battle of Cambrai (November 1917), the Allied retreat at Arras (March 1918) and advance at Albert (August 1918) and the final advance into Picardy (October - November 1918), but more important for his comments on entertainment for men and officers, his feelings of low morale and depression, his friendship with the Prince of Wales, his references to such prominent figures as General Sir Ivor Maxse, Winston Churchill, and David Lloyd George, the award of the VC to Sergeant J H Rhodes of the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards (November 1917), and the support gained from religious services. Also with the collection are microfilm copies of the papers relating to General Thorne's published article (1932) about the fighting at the Gheluvelt Cross Roads (October 1914).
