Description: | 72 letters and cards (originals and transcripts) written during his service on the Western Front as an artillery officer on attachment to the Army Signal Service (September 1914 - August 1915) and, very briefly, with the 37th Battery Royal Field Artillery (RFA) (September 1915) and then in Salonika, eventually as Brigade Major RA to the 26th Division (1916 - 1918), with useful references to operations in the first months of the war, including the Battle of the Aisne, attitudes to the enemy, the execution of two German officers and the conduct of French colonial troops, together with a few official service papers and letters to him from various correspondents, including Lieutenant General Sir Frederick Morgan (1907 - 1944) and papers relating to his family including: 120 ms letters from his father, Colonel Frederick Howard Fairtlough, written mainly from South Africa, where he commanded the 3rd Battalion, The Queen's Regiment during the Boer War (December 1899 - December 1901) and 32 ms letters and cards while commanding the 8th Battalion, The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment in England and on the Western Front (April - September 1915), with papers relating to the Godalming Company, Surrey Veterans Reserve (1911 - 1912) and to his death in action at the Battle of Loos (26 September 1915); 49 letters (originals and transcripts) from his brother, Captain G H Fairtlough, written during his service on the Western Front (October 1914 - April 1918) with the 1/28th Battalion, London Regiment (Artists Rifles), the 3rd Cavalry Division and the Royal Engineers, mentioning conditions at the front, his duties with the Royal Engineers, including operations during the German Spring Offensive shortly before he died of wounds in June 1918, together with service papers; 6 letters (originals and transcripts) from his brother, Lieutenant L H Fairtlough, written during his service with the Artists Rifles and, after his commissioning, with the 2nd Battalion, The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment on the Western Front (November 1914 - May 1915); 19 ms letters from his brother, Major H L Fairtlough, written principally between 1939 and 1944, while he was serving with the 14th Infantry Brigade in Palestine in 1939 - 1940, with 212 Company Pioneer Corps during the invasion of Sicily and after the Allied landings in Normandy; and various documents relating to his aunt and sister, photographs and a letter from Prince Frederick (29 July 1825)
