Description: | Outstanding series of 60 ms diaries (including 9 in photocopy form only), richly illustrated with photographs, drawings and ephemera covering his service, principally as a Lieutenant with the 5th Battalion (2/5th battalion) Royal Sussex Regiment at the Tower of London (November 1914), in Hastings, Sussex (November 1914 - May 1915), at Woolwich Arsenal (May - September 1915), at Sunningdale near Windsor (September - October 1915), at Purfleet, Essex (October 1915, January - February 1916), Rye, Sussex (February - August 1916), with the 2/4th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment at Purley (October 1916), with the 1/5th (Pioneer) Battalion on the Western Front near Albert repairing roads, building tram ways and renovating rest camps (October 1916 - January 1917) and elsewhere in the Somme sector and the Hindenburg line (February - June 1917), attached to 18th Corps Railway Construction in the Ypres sector (July - August 1917) in command of the Langham Scouts (divisional observers, 48th Division) at Passchendaele (October 1917), Vimy Ridge (October - November 1917) and in Italy (November 1917 - November 1918) during road and reconnaissance work and observation work on the Montello Front, at Trissino and on the Asiago Plateau (where he witnessed the offensive of June 1918), as a staff officer with 48th Division in Italy (November 1918 - April 1919), with 31st Infantry Brigade in Egypt (May 1919 - March 1920), in civilian employment (1920 - 1921) and as a Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles in Mesopotamia and Egypt (May - June 1921), with detailed descriptions of the life of a Subaltern, various other aspects of Army life and useful references to civilian conditions, recruitment, Zeppelin raids on Dover and London (1915 - 1916), conscription, the Easter Rising in Dublin, conditions in Italy, Egypt and Mesopotamia, discipline amongst officers and men, demobilization and courses attended at Newark, Nottinghamshire (pioneering 1915), Aldershot (physical and bayonet training 1916) and 4th Army Infantry School (France 1917); also 10 albums collated during his service as a Major with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles in England and Palestine and as a liason officer to the General Staff, Palestine Command (1937 - 1939), as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion RUR in India and England (1939 - 1941) and as Commander of the 129th Infantry Brigade, 43rd Division (1941 - 1942), Director of Special Weapons and Vehicles (1942 - 1945), GOC British Troops in Siam (1946) and Deputy Master General of the Ordnance, GHQ in India (1947), including photographs, ephemera and official papers covering Coronation events in England (1937), Arab insurgents in Palestine, chemical warfare, V weapons, Belsen concentration camp, Germany in 1945, Japanese Prisoners-of-War in Siam and autograph letters from Field Marshal Montgomery and Lord Mountbatten as well as other papers including a history of the Langham Scouts.
