Description: | Photocopies (245pp) of 136 ms letters, cards and telegrams written while he was at OTC Fort Dowland, Chatham, Kent (August – September 1915) and while serving: with the 4th Battalion Highland Light Infantry at Haddington, East Lothian (October 1915 - ?January 1916); en route to Mudros on HMT OLYMPIC (February 1916) and in Egypt and Palestine (March 1916 – February 1918), initially as a platoon commander attached to 1/5th Battalion, HLI (157th Infantry Brigade, 52 Division), then as a Machine Gun Officer attached to 157 Brigade MG Company(mid May - November 1916), then seconded to the Machine Gun Corps (November 1916 – February 1918); at an MGC Camp near Grantham, Lincolnshire (April – May 1918) and in France and on the Western Front, eventually with the 15th Machine Gun Battalion (July – November 1918), as well as after he had been severely wounded by a trench mortar shell on 5 November 1918 while in hospital in France and England and during his lengthy convalescence (November 1918 – September 1919), with references to fighting in the Canal Zone (July 1916) and to the 2nd and 3rd Battles of Gaza (April and October/November 1917) and mention also of conditions in the desert and attitudes to the Turks; together with photocopies (76pp) of 10 letters from his brother (Captain W H Burleigh) dated May 1915 – April 1919, correspondence received by his parents after he had been wounded, including details of the aftermath in 3 letters written by his batman (Meichen) who helped save his life, of photographs and of other papers relating to his military service as well as an ms diary (27pp and other notes 2pp) with brief entries, February – August 1916, covering his voyage to Alexandria, experiences at Sidi Bishi and Kantara in Egypt prior to posting and being in action (4 – 5 August), an exercise book containing lecture notes (94pp) mainly concerning machine guns (May – June 1916), other papers including printed items, 76 mainly uncaptioned photographs, most apparently relating to France during the First World War and an album (97pp) containing photographs (with a list of captions) covering his voyage to Egypt, Turkish prisoners of war, war graves, scenes in Palestine and Egypt and pictures taken in France (1919).
