Description: | Photocopy of two extracts from a ts account (together with a microfilm copy), written ca 1970, the first part (66pp) covering his service with the 1/14th Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish) (1st Brigade, 1st Division until February 1916, then 168th Brigade, 56th Division) on the Western Front, September 1914 - May 1916, describing his part in the fighting at Messines Ridge (31 October 1914) and in the woods around Klein Zillebeke, the heavy losses suffered, tours of duty in the trenches in the Givenchy and Guinchy sectors, his time in hospital at St Omar while suffering from jaundice, being in reserve during the battle for Aubers Ridge (May 1915) and then taking part in the Battle of Loos (25 September 1915); then his commission into the Heavy Branch of the Machine Gun Corps and posting to the 26th Company, 9th Battalion Tank Corps in France (summer - November 1917), describing his friendship with second-in-command Clement R Attlee during their training at Bovington, the qualities needed in a tank officer, their involvement in the Battle of Cambrai (November 1917) and, after being wounded, his evacuation to the face hospital at Sidcup, Kent. The second extract from his ts account covers his time as a platoon commander in the Hampstead Home Guard during the Second World War, in which he pays tribute to the dedication of the Home Guard, of which many members were First World War veterans, and describes his work at the Albemarle Street premises of John Morgan, bespoke tailors, supplying uniforms to officers. The account is interspersed with copies of letters and cards.
