Description: | Ts transcription of a diary (110pp) covering his service as a Medical Officer with the 7th Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) (55th Brigade, 18th Division), (July 1915 - April 1916), detailing his arrival in France and his impressions of the trenches on the Western Front, also outlining his joining the 21st Casualty Clearing Station Royal Army Medical Corp, (May 1916 - November 1916) where his duties involved mainly dressing wounds and attending the surgeon during operations, describing the overwhelming number of casualties he treated throughout the Battle of the Somme (July 1916) but only touching on the types of injuries soldiers sustained in action, continuing with his attachment as temporary Captain to the 11th Field Ambulance RAMC (December 1916 - December 1917) at which point the diary entries become increasingly brief, mentioning only the adverse weather conditions and his movements on the Front Line; together with extracts of the London Gazette announcing his being awarded the Military Cross, dated 18 July and 26 November 1917 as well as an obituary that appeared in the local Ayrshire newspaper just after his death in 1931.
