Liquid compass
Bowl: Grey painted brass, filler plug at side, and expanding glazed bottom for illumination from below. An azimuth circle of the large prism type is fitted being supplied with tripod at centre to carry a shadow pin ( five shadow pins are carried in a rack in binnacle). Inside of bowl painted white and has a black wire lubber line at foreside. Mounted in a gimbal ring carried in a flexible wire grommet ring, to damp out vibrations, attached by hooks to side of binnacle.
Binnacle: Black painted aluminium, diameter 11" (28cm) and height 10.25" (26cm). Has sliding door in side leading to a recess which accommodates a rack for carrying corrector magnets and the lamp for lighting compass card. A metal diaphragm separates this recess and is fitted with a dimming shutter. A hood is provided to protect compass.
Card: Diameter 4" (10.2cm). This mica ring, white with black markings, graduated to 360 degrees, attached by four wires to pivot mounting at centre.
Needle: Six needles 2.5" (6.3cm) in length attached below card.
Pivot: Inverted type, brass pivot stem carrying jewelled pivot cup attached to bridge at bottom of bowl.
