Liquid compass
Bowl: Grey painted brass, two filler plugs and two side expansion chambers are fitted. Base of bowl glazed, for illumination from below. An azimuth circle of the large prism type is fitted being supplied with tripod at centre to carry a shadow pin ( five shadow pins are carried in a rack in binnacle). Inside of bowl painted white and has a black lubber mark mounted and a white bracket on foreside. Mounted in a gimbal ring carried in a flexible wire grommet ring, to damp out vibrations, attached by hooks to side of binnacle.
Binnacle: Black painted aluminium, diameter 11" (28cm) and height 10.25" (26cm). Has sliding door in side leading to a recess which accommodates a rack for carrying corrector magnets and the lamp for lighting compass card. A metal diaphragm separates this recess and is fitted with a dimming shutter. A hood is provided to protect compass.
Card: Diameter 5" (12.7cm), white painted mica with black markings, graduated to 1/4 points and to 360 degrees. Attached to white painted float at centre, whcih carries the pivot point.
Needle: Two magnets of circular section attached to base of float.
Pivot: Inverted type, the stem carrying jewelled pivot cup is attached to glass at bottom of bowl.
