Description: | Pressed and stamped three-part hollow domed silver-plated copper alloy button with separate soldered attachment loop, embossed with the white ensign flag over a the 'foul' anchor, where the anchor is entangled with a cable, within linear and ropework borders, and on the back stamped with the maker's name: E STILLWELL & SON within the Royal Garter.This company was producing naval buttons in London during the 19th century, and some are dated to pre-1840, according to various sources, such as Bailey and UKDFD, and they continued as button makers until 1957, when the company was liquidated.Meredith & Cuddeford (1997) illustrate a similar button with an ensign above a foul anchor on page 20, No.1, which is made by Goy & Co. between 1861 and 1876, for the Richard Green Line, a shipping company, named after Richard Green who lived from 1803-1863.
