Description: | Pressed and stamped three-part hollow domed brass button with separate soldered attachment loop, embossed with the letters G.W.R., for Great Western Railway, and on the back stamped with the maker's name: COMPTON.SONS & WEBB Ltd. LONDON.This company made army issue clothing and police uniforms under the name J. Compton Sons & Webb from the beginning of the 1930s, but seems to change to Compton Sons & Webb after the Second World War, although is still referred to as J Compton Sons & Webb until 1978 when it was bought up. The style of the lettering on the button suggests that it dates from c.1901-1934 according to various websites selling GWR brass buttons, and compared to railway buttons illustrated in Meredith & Cuddeford (1997) on page 19, No.2, from Somerset and Dorset, which dates from 1875 to 1930, and a GWR button, No.5, with more recent design, dating from 1934 to 1948.
