Description: | Rajonuddin Jalal, a leader of the Bangladeshi Youth Movement (BYM) formed in the 1970s speaks to Jamil Iqbal and Charlie Sen of the Swadhinata Trust about the racism faced by the Bangladeshi Community in the 1970s and the Community?s attempts to defend itself. At this time, there was much racial prejudice against the Bangladeshi community. The far-right National Front (NF) was involved in a number of inflammatory activities. Less organised racial taunting and assaults also occurred. Following the racist murder of Altab Ali in 1978, a number of Bangladeshi community groups formed. The primary purpose of these groups was to stand up to those promoting racism. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ | Publisher: | Bishopsgate Institute | Rights holder: | Swadhinata Trust | Subjects: | Migration and Citizenship Communities Power and Politics | Temporal: | 2006 | Source: | Bishopsgate Institute | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Go to resource |
