Description: | Abdus Shukur was a leader of the Bangladeshi Youth Movement (BYM) in the 1970s. Here, in conversation with Jamil Iqbal and Charlie Sen of the Swadhinata Trust, he recalls the Bangladeshi community?s response to the racist murder of the garment worker Altab Ali in 1978. Racially-motivated abuse and assaults, as well as institutional racism were a great problem for the Bangladeshi community at this time. The murder of Altab Ali was a turning-point in community relations, as it led to the formation of a number of self-defence groups by the Bangladeshi community. Here, Mr Shukur recalls some of the groups which existed at the time. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ | Publisher: | Bishopsgate Institute | Rights holder: | Swadhinata Trust | Subjects: | Migration and Citizenship Communities Power and Politics | Temporal: | 2006 | Source: | Bishopsgate Institute | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Go to resource |
