Description: | A research and postgraduate collection containing about 60,000 volumes (including 3,000 early printed and rare books), archives and manuscripts, and audio-visual collections. The library collects every significant publication for the study of Shakespeare and Renaissance drama and the supporting collections cover literary, cultural, political, religious, and social history of the period. Significant research collections include Shakespearean drama, Stage history, and a Newscuttings collection. A broad range of topics are covered in Shakespearean drama including editions (microfilm copies of early texts), translations, textual studies, sources, criticism, stage history from the seventeenth century to the present, recordings and criticism relating to television versions. Archive collections include production materials, material in the New Shakespeare Company archive and in the Renaissance Theatre Company archive. Stage History materials include extensive collections on many areas of Shakespearean stage history from the 15th century to the present. Printed collections cover Elizabethan theatres and theatre companies, Restoration adaptations, 19th century performances, twentieth-century stage history, and biographies of principle actors and directors. Relevant material in special collections includes the archives or the New Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Renaissance Theatre Company. In addition, a large number of prompt books are held in facsimile. The library also maintains an online Shakespeare in Performance database (http://www.is.bham.ac.uk/shakespeare/performance.htm). The Newscuttings cover newspaper cuttings relating to Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama. Coverage is as broad as possible including theatre reviews, interviews with theatre practitioners, book reviews, articles relating to Shakespeare's biography, cartoons, and headlines which are based on a well known quotation.
