Description: | half-length portrait of the composer William de Fesch. William de Fesch (1687-1761) was appointed Kapellmeister at Antwerp Cathedral in 1725, where he gained a reputation as mean, temperamental and slovenly. In 1731 he came to London, where, as a concert violinist, he was to spend the rest of his life. In 1746 he was first violinist in Handel's orchestra, and from 1748-9 he directed the orchestra at Marylebone Gardens.
