Description: | The papers of theatre patron and manager Annie Horniman (1860-1937) consist of ten scrapbooks containing press cuttings relating to the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, 1903-1918; seventeen relating to the Gaiety Theatre, Manchester and the repertory movement in England, 1907-1921; and an important collection of correspondence with authors and playwrights relating to Miss Horniman's and others' work in the theatre, 1904-1979. Individuals represented in the correspondence include: George Bernard Shaw, Arnold Bennett, J. M. Barrie, John Galsworthy, Harold Brighouse, Edward Garnett, W. B. Yeats, Marie Stopes and Emmeline Pankhurst. There are also programmes, photographs and family papers, which include, particularly, correspondence with Marjorie Garrod, Annie Horniman's second cousin, with whom she corresponded from 1914 to the year she died.; Handlists and catalogues are available for the papers of Horniman, Dean, Hunt, Joseph, Slade, Nicholson, Pettitt, Monkhouse, Montague, Thrale-Piozzi, North West Playwrights, Donat and "Manchester Guardian".
