Description: | Stephen Joseph (1921-1967) is best remembered as one of the champions of new theatre forms, especially "theatre in the round". Amongst other things, he founded the Studio Theatre Company, the first professional repertory group formed for the express purpose of performing plays in the round. The company toured all over England during the 1950s, with summer seasons at Scarborough. A permanent base was created in 1962 at the Victoria Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent. Stephen Joseph was appointed the first fellow of the newly created Department of Drama at Manchester University in 1962. The collection consists mainly of correspondence, covering most aspects of Stephen Joseph's career. There are also many original manuscripts of books, articles and open letters, as well as plans and photographs relating to theatres designed by him, especially theatre in the round; there are also set designs, and papers relating to the Association of British Theatre Technicians, 1946-1967.
