Description: | This is a photographic archive of productions at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre and tours from 1879-1960, and by the RSC at any of its theatres or on tour from 1961. The collection is based primarily around photographic prints, but also includes some postcards, contact prints, mounted promotional material, poster display boards and (since 1990)colour slides (transparencies). Set photographs are available continuously from 1932-1945, and intermittently either side of these years, and regularly from the mid 1990s onwards. Pre-1926 photographs are intermittent, as Benson Company revivals did not always have new photographs created for them and there are very few photographs from productions staged at the Temporary (Picture House)Theatre 1926-1931, but the collection is near comprehensive after the opening of the new theatre in 1932.; There is a Library catalogue available. Some material is also listed separately.
