Description: | The printed books section specialises in history and topography of England, especially London. It includes many items of theatrical interest, as follows. Histories of London theatres; biographies of actors and actresses; approximately 1,600, mainly 19th-century, dramatic texts (Chapman and Hamilton Bequests); B Pollock's juvenile dramas c.1840-1903; general reference works. In the Print Room can be found a very large collection of posters and programmes relating to formal theatrical productions in London from the year 1750 onwards. The collection is arranged by theatre name and then chronologically for each theatre, but neither the production names or the names of performers are indexed. Posters and programmes relating to theatres outside London are represented only in much smaller numbers. A further collection contains many interesting posters from less formal London Entertainments such as fairs, circuses, exhibitions and menageries. This material is mostly 19th century.; On-line public access catalogue, providing access by author, title, subject and keyword. Handlist of books in Guildhall Library on the London Theatre (1633-1900) in Guildhall Miscellany Vol 4, No 2, April 1972.
