Description: | Gilded reeded, 34.7 x 44.3 x 4.2 s. with butterfly; v. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This unfinished panel demonstrates Whistler's painting technique. The composition was firstly sketched in black on a grey-primed wooden panel, then the central areas would have been coloured with thinned-down oil paints. The panel was painted in Paris. The theme of shopfronts and streetscapes recurs throughout Whistler's work.
