Description: | Gilded reeded, 33.0 x 38.9 x 5.4 s. with butterfly; b.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) Whistler married Beatrix Godwin in 1888 and it is believed that this small seascape is one of several panel paintings completed during the Whistlers' honeymoon in the autumn of that year. They spent two weeks in Brittany before travelling south to the Loire Valley, much of their time being spent in Dieppe. However, it is possible that this work was painted in 1885, during a later visit by Whistler to Dieppe, with the butterfly being added at a later date.
