After Whistler?s death in 1903, his heir and sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip, commissioned the London printer, Frederick Goulding, to print posthumous editions of many of Whistler?s lithographs. Between October 1903 and May 1904, Goulding pulled impressions from 94 stones and transferred and printed 10 previously untransferred lithographic drawings. Whistler chose to draw the subject of shopfronts in many different media throughout his career. The laundry shop that is the subject of this lithograph was located on the place Dauphine, between the Palais de Justice and the Pont Neuf, in Paris. Using careful line, the areas of light and shade in this drawing were carefully developed by Whistler. He was convinced that the drawing would transfer well and in a letter written to Thomas Way he referred to "what I fancy is perhaps the best drawing I have done" and continued to regard "The Laundress: La Blanchisseuse de la Place Dauphine" as being one of his best works in lithography.(See also GLAHA 49077/49361/49363/49364/49386/49672/49783).
